"I'll take them all!"

Today at our weekly visit to a local farmer’s market, I did something I have never done before. I bought more than 35lbs of no pesticides, heirloom tomatoes for $30.

We have a particular tomato lady we go to every time we go to this farmer’s market. She has different kinds of Heirloom tomatoes with price range of $2.50 and $3.50 per pound. She also has this box of mature tomatoes for $1.50 per pound. I usually buy those kind because I make tomato sauce and salsa within a few days, and the ripe ones are the best kind for the recipe. So today, when I saw a big crate full of tomatoes under the sign “$1.50”, I asked my husband, “do you think I can buy all of them?” The negotiation went like this.

Me: “Hi, I have a question. If I am to buy all of these tomatoes, how much would you sell them for?

Tomato Lady: “Well, I will give you for $1 per pound”

Me: “how many pound do you think there is?”

Tomato Lady: “do you want me to weigh them ?”

Me: “sure!”

And they weighed 35 plus pound…

Tomato Lady: “ I will give you $30 for all”

Me: “I will take them all.”

Everyone at the booth looked at me. One lady asked me, “where do you live? I want to come over for dinner.” It was so much fun to buy all of the tomatoes. The tomato lady let us leave the tomatoes until we finished shopping other veggies and fruits at the farmer’s market. When my husband went to pick the tomatoes up, the lady tried to find more ripe tomatoes in the other crate, and she said, “oh, just take them all” and put bunch of great not so ripe tomatoes to our crate.

So now at home, I have over 35 pounds of tomatoes on the table, and one big pot of tomato sauce simmering at midnight (I had to wait until my daughter went to sleep to cook) Tomorrow, I am making two salsas and more tomato sauce for freezing for the next couple of weeks.

I love farmer’s market in the summer!!
